HOW TO USE THE RHYMECOLOGY GAME
Pre-Session: Prior to engaging in the Rhymecology game, it is recommended to gauge the youth’s interest in hip-hop culture. If it is moderate to high, proceed to play.
Why: The Rhymecology® Game uses Hip-Hop culture to approach topics often covered in therapy or counseling. This game encourages self reflective answers and empowers youth to think critically not only about hip-hop culture but themselves as well.
Where: This game can be used in offices, after school programs, classrooms, living rooms, parks, cars and/or any other area one-on-one conversations may take place.
How:
1) Therapist and client take turns picking, reading and responding to cards.
2) While one player responds the other observes a “code of silence” until the other is finished. Comments, questions, or reflections should come once the other player finished.
3) If a player feels uncomfortable with any card, they can pass and pull another, as many times as they want.
Hints:
1) There should be an equal amount of cards pulled by therapist and youth. This equalizes the process, while talking and learning about a topic many youth care about.
2) If youth curses while answering a “creative” question, there should be no reprimand as hip-hop is filled with curses that often accentuate feelings of the artist.
3) As neither client nor therapist will know all of the songs/artists listed in the cards, it is highly recommended that the one of the two pull up the songs to listen to during session (This can be done through iTunes, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and more)
4) Don’t respond to every question with therapeutic response or intervention. Just trust us.
Disclaimer: The Rhymecology Game will not be effective with every adolescent. Ideally, this game should be used as an adjunct to traditional therapy or counseling. Persons playing game should be cognizant of the challenges specific to each adolescent before playing.
